Considering a Whippet?

Timbreblue Spies on Santa - "Boo"

Because most whippet breeders place their puppies very carefully, do not overbreed, and always take back dogs of their breeding, there are seldom many whippets in rescue at any one time. It's unusual to have more than ten or 12 available nationally. If you want to adopt a rescue, contact the closest Whippet Rescue and Placement member near you for an application. In Virginia, contact your closest independent whippet rescuer.

Training

Whippets are sighthounds, bred to chase without commands from the handler. While generally not stubborn, they're independent and not the easiest breed to train. Don't let that discourage you: They are very intelligent and all can learn house manners easily, like sit, down, and stay. Some do well with more advanced obedience, including obedience competition. Most enjoy lure coursing (chasing a plastic bag pulled by a string) and racing and are also good in agility and flyball comptition. But if you are looking for a dog to make your name in the competitive obedience world, get a Border collie!
